SYLLABUS OUTLINE
The Certificate in Journalism and Print Production offers students an opportunity to study the
different styles of journalistic writing, and the writing, editing and production of newsletters.
Certification is awarded on successful submission of three assignments, an examination and a project.
Topics studied include:
Journalism
Introduction to Journalism
Contrasting broadsheet and tabloid media styles
Principles of news writing: use of language, inverted pyramid, news reporting
Court reporting
Libel and Defamation
Common grammatical errors
Newspaper stylebooks and housestyles
Print Production
Different printing processes
Sourcing printers, designers, photographers
The essentials of graphic design
Budgets, tendering, winning the business
Managing print
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Applicants should be advised that the Certificate in Journalism and Print Production is a third level course for
which the following entry requirements are necessary:
- Candidates must be at least 17 years of age.
- Candidates should have achieved their Leaving Certificate with passes in 5 subjects, one of which should
be English.
- Candidates should have a thorough knowledge of written and spoken English.
Mature applicants who fail to meet the above requirements should contact the Academy regarding
application procedures.
Selection will be by written application only. Places are limited and will, therefore, be offered subject to availability.
FEES
The fee for the Certificate in Journalism and Print Production is €730. Application forms
should be accompanied by a deposit of €75. The deposit will be refunded if the application is unsuccessful.
The balance of the fee will be invoiced to students who have been accepted onto the course, and should be paid in
full before the course begins.
Students are liable to pay examination fees, currently €250 per student.
